The Last Patio Clean Before Winter

18th November 2021

It’s that time of year again, as the temperature drops and we pack away our garden furniture until next spring. But if you’re tempted to shut the back door and leave your patio to face the elements – think again! Now is the time to prepare your patio for the harsh conditions of winter, so that you don’t waste a moment of sunshine once the warmer weather arrives again next year.

Pressure wash your patio

If your patio is laden with debris, then it’s best to clear this away to protect the surface of your paving. Rainfall throughout autumn may already have encouraged algae and moss to grow on your stonework, so a pressure wash of the area will help to remove this.

Washing your patio is also an important step to take before applying a block paving sealant. But take care not to do this when it’s too cold outside as damage can occur when rainwater freezes.

Seal your patio

Once you have carried out all the prep work for your patio, the next step is to seal it with a product such as Resiblock Superior Natural Matt, which is regarded as the no. 1 patio sealant in Europe. By sealing your paving, this offers excellent protection against the strongest of weather conditions including rain, snow, wind and hail. As the block paving sealant lasts for up to 5 years, you can also be confident that there will be no loss of colour when your patio faces strong sunshine next year.

A single coat of Resiblock paving sealant covers up to 3 square metres per litre, with the second coat covering up to 6 square metres per litre.

Using an awning

When using a sealant on your paving, it’s important to get the conditions right before you begin. Only apply the solution when the surface temperature falls between 3 and 30 degrees Celsius. But you should also check that there isn’t adverse weather such as rain or storms predicted in the next few hours when the block paving sealant is drying. Using a garden awning above your patio area is a good tip as this can protect your sealant in case of any unexpected rainfall.

Don’t forget your driveway

When preparing your patio and other outdoor areas for the winter months, be careful not to neglect your driveway which is often the first impression visitors will get of your home. If your driveway is constructed from tarmac or similar materials, then you would be better off using a separate product such as Resimac tarmac restorer to protect your installation during the colder weather.
