Our Top Tips for Applying Permeable Paving Products

30th July 2021

If you are planning out a paving project, then remember to factor in how any excess water will be able to drain away from the surface of your installation. Permeable paving products are critical as they allow that water to flow through to the sub layers below, which is safer for pedestrians and also minimises the chance of property damage. Here is how to choose and apply the best permeable paving products in the market.

Choosing your paving solutions

For top results, you will need a joint aggregate stabiliser that offers the following features:

  • Allows drainage whilst preventing weed growth between the joints
  • Protects against heavy footfall and the impact of regular cleaning
  • Stain resistant finish to the top layer

Resiblock Envirofix offers all the above benefits, and more. Follow these tips and be rewarded with fantastic results.

Cleaning and preparation work

To get the best out of your application, it is important to spend time prepping your installation before you begin. However, on new installations, you should use Resiblock’s Envirofix on a daily basis throughout every stage of your construction.

Before you begin, make sure both the surface and the jointing aggregate are dry. The paving itself must be thoroughly swept with not a hint of the aggregate left on the surface. Cleaning the surface with a mild detergent is a good plan so long as you leave the installation to dry out completely before you begin.

Checking the weather conditions

As with all paving solutions, it is essential that you plan this project around the weather. Check the forecast to make sure there is no chance of rain in the next 24 hours. Ideally, the temperature should be somewhere between 5 and 30 degrees Celsius. Any extremes in temperature either below or above this range could cause problems with the application.

Using the right tools

Assemble the following equipment before you begin your project:

  • Watering can
  • Resiblock squeegee
  • Resiblock Envirofix
  • Protective goggles and gloves
  • Detergent

Wear the protective gear before you begin your work. You should then stir the contents of the Envirofix well to make sure it is ready to be moved into place. Use your watering can, with the rose to sprinkle the material over the surface, making sure that you cover the entire area. Any surplus can be removed with your Resiblock squeegee. If you prefer, then a Resi-roller can also be used for this step. Either way, it is imperative that you remove the surplus mixture before allowing any pedestrian or motor traffic to move across the surface of your installation.

One coat or two?

Some sealing products require you to use two coats to gain optimal results for your application. However, the Envirofix product has been developed as a one-coat system. You should not need to apply a second coat unless you feel that the joints have not bonded correctly with the aggregate.
