Rialto Homes, Hewetts Quay, Barking

The Site

In 2004 Rialto Homes completed Hewetts Quay in Barking, a project designed to significantly enhance the stretch of the River Roding at Abbey Road. Clay Block Paving was used to create a traditional look through a combination of interesting courtyard space, as well as footpaths through the buildings onto the walkway along Barking Creek.

The Challenge

With the nearby River Roding dramatically bursting its banks in 2000, Barking & Dagenham Council were keen to ensure that jointing sand loss at the Rialto Homes site at Hewetts Quay in Barking would be prevented, as flooding could also lead to the destabilisation of the bedding sand.

Rialto Homes were particularly eager that the sealing solution prevented the growth of weeds and provided protection against oil-staining, so that the aesthetic appearance of the paving remained.

The Solution

By installing Resiblock ’22’ Barking & Dagenham Councils primary objective of preventing the jointing sand being washed away was met.  However, Resiblock ’22’ also prevents weeds and grasses growing in the joints of pavers, thereby resolving the Councils secondary concern and Rialto Homes main concern, ensuring that maintenance of the paved areas are kept to an absolute minimum.

Since installation 15 years ago, Resiblock ’22’ has withstood all minor flooding that has occurred in the area, whilst also protecting against trafficking in the area.

Benefits

Easy application and requires no specialist labour; both ‘Resiblock 22’ binds the jointing sand preventing its removal from both natural and manmade forces. Both products will inhibit weed and grass growth from the joint whilst providing a significant degree of stain protection. Once cured, it remains fully elastomeric thereby accommodating the small elastic deflections incorporated in the pavement design.
