Knocknacarra Phase 2, Gateway Retail Park, Galway

The Site

In 2016 Sigma Retail Partners purchased the Gateway Retail Park on behalf of Oaktree Capital. Since then, the site has gone through two phases of expansion to create one of the biggest retail parks in Galway. The second phase, which is due to be completed by early 2020, will see total amount of retail space at the Knocknacarra shopping hub 325,000sq ft. The second phase is being anchored by Harvey Norman who have secured a colossal 60,000sq ft Harvey Norman superstore that will form nearly half of the new retail space. Over 150 car parking spaces are being installed as part of the developments.

Problem

With Concrete Block Paving being used throughout the site, the client was keen to ensure that stabilisation of the pavers was had throughout both the walkways and car parking spaces at Knocknacarra. During the initial building phases, the site was known as ‘the hole in the ground’ (due to its location within a valley) so both client and architect looked to make certain that water ingress into the pavers would not be an issue.

Solution

Following discussions between Resiblock and project architects JSA Architects Resiblock Resiecco was specified for use on the Kilsaran blocks at Knocknacarra. Resiblock Resiecco had case history to show that the sealer would fully protect against water ingress, therefore making the pavers impervious to rainwater. The sealer also came with the added benefits of protecting against food, drinks and chewing gum stains, which was a secondary concern of the client due to the number of food outlets at the site.

Benefits

Stabilisation of the sand filled joint notwithstanding cleaning regimes and trafficking whilst imparting the following additional benefits:

  • Prevents jointing sand loss from cleaning regimes & heavy footfall
  • Significantly reduces staining by food and drink
  • Virtually eliminates residual staining by chewing gum oils
  • Inhibits the growth of weeds and grass in joints
  • Environmentally friendly – solvent free
