Huddersfield University 5th Anniversary

The Site

Huddersfield University has a long and proud tradition of providing education since 1825 and was established as a Scientific and Mechanic Institute.  The University is focused on strengthening and enhancing its research facilities and is still strong in Sciences today, notably Chemistry, but has invested heavily in Computing and Engineering Technology, Creative Arts (including Art and Design Studios and Live Recording Studios) and Business. It is now able to accommodate 24,000 students

The design and construction of a £21.5-million Learning and Leisure Centre opened in spring 2014, which brings together access to the Library, Computing, Sport and Leisure and Eating all under one roof.

The Challenge

Concern was expressed with regards to the erosion of jointing sand from the clay block paved areas through cleaning regimes, i.e. pressure washing and vacuum sweeping, leading to paver destabilisation and ultimately paving failure and associated increased maintenance costs. Furthermore, with the capability to host nearly 25,000 students, concerns around foot-traffic leading to sand erosion also existed.

The Solution:

Following trials, Resiblock beat off competition thanks to the simple yet durable one coat application of Resiblock ’22’. The history of Resiblock ’22’ being used to successfully seal and stabilise sand joints to prevent erosion is known worldwide, thanks to the success at sites such as Port of Salalah and Hong Kong International Airport.

In the five years since the first application of Resiblock ’22’, the clay block paving at Huddersfield University continues to be strong and stabilised due to the solid sand joints.
