Ely High Street, Cambridge

The Site

Ely is 12m (20km) North of Cambridge and sits in the heart of the Fen countryside. Dominating the skyline is Ely Cathedral, one of the biggest cathedrals in England. Ely itself was one of the country’s smallest cities but is rapidly expanding and this is reflected in the growing number of shops and businesses along the High Street.

The Challenge

The existing Tegula block paving, adjacent to the shops, is subjected to HGV trafficking during the evening and early morning delivery windows. The paving, unable to withstand these lateral loads was failing. Coupled with the mechanical cleaning regimes which was removing the jointing sand during cleaning, causing paver destabilisation and thus leading to tripping hazards.

The Solution

It was decided to re-lay a proportion of the existing paving. However, there were concerns that the existing mechanical cleaning regimes would again remove the jointing sand leading to the same paver destabilisation/trip hazards. During a CPD presentation to the Cambridge County Council Highways Team and Representatives from their term Contractors, it was realised that the application of Resiblock ‘22’ (a one pack moisture cured specialist pre-polymer urethane jointing sand stabiliser) would ensure no sand loss through mechanical cleaning regimes, pedestrian footfall or heavy duty trafficking and would also give protection again staining from foodstuffs, chewing gum and oil.

Benefits

Easy application and requires no specialist labour; ‘Resiblock 22’ binds the jointing sand preventing its removal from both natural and manmade forces. It will inhibit weed and grass growth from the joint whilst providing a significant degree of stain protection. Once cured, it remains fully elastomeric thereby accommodating the small elastic deflections incorporated in the pavement design.
