The Battis, Romford

The Site

Havering Council was awarded £1.8 million to revamp Victoria Road and The Battis in Romford Town Centre.  The new project has injected a splash of colour into The Battis, a well-used Romford walkway that runs alongside Romford Station from South Street to Waterloo Road. It has been transformed with the installation of brightly coloured paving to the length of the alleyway and a new open square next to the station entrance. The square will eventually form the gateway to the new Crossrail Station. It is also hoped that the use of feature lighting will encourage use of the space and reduce anti-social behaviour.

The Challenge

As the pavers have a thermoplastic colour coating, long-term stain protection against discarded food, chewing gum, moss, algae and lichen was a priority to help keep the colour integrity of the blocks intact.  Concern was also expressed about jointing sand erosion and paver de-stabilisation from the high volumes of pedestrian traffic, cleaning regimes (ranging from pressure washing to vacuum sweeping) and environmental elements.

The Solution

Resiblock offered from its significant range of specialist paving sealers, Resiblock Resiecco. A water based solvent free paving sealer suitable for both internal and external application.  It has a high degree of resistance to commercial oil/food staining making cleaning regimes a less arduous task.  The product when applied to the paving will stabilise the jointing sand preventing its erosion from both natural elements i.e. wind, rain etc., as well as preventing erosion from manmade forces such as pressure washing and vacuum sweeping, providing effectively maintenance-free paving. The same is used at sites such as Manchester United Football Club and The O2 Arena, London.

The Benefits

Resiblock Resiecco is a one pack material, it is broadcast over the surface of the paving with simplistic tools and does not require any specialist labour.  It will bind the paver jointing sand preventing its erosion from trafficking, natural elements and manmade cleaning regimes.
