Sun City Hotel & Casino, South Africa

The Site

The Sun City Casino Hotel opened in 1979 and has been one of South Africa’s premier tourist destinations ever since. In 2025 it underwent a ZAR390Mil (GBP17.5Mil) refurbishment. An essential part of this major refurbishment was the re-engineering of traffic flows. Access roads and the porte-cochere were redesigned, modernised and paved with new block paving.

Problem

Due to the plan size of the pavers (300mm in length with an aspect ratio of 3:1), the architects were concerned about the interlock of the pavers installed in a herringbone pattern. In addition to this, the areas were to be subjected to heavy vehicular traffic, including frequent busses. It was recognised that special consideration should be given to the jointing and the interlock it creates. Therefore, Resiblock 22 WB was specified to stabilise the sand joints.

Solution

Cretesol, Resiblock’s distributor for South Africa, were able to showcase to the client the long-term benefits of utilising Resiblock to seal and stabilise jointing sand, ultimately allying the fears that were shared by both the client and architect. Following discussions & the installation of new paving in 2025, the entire 2,000m2 of paving at the Hotels’ entrance was sealed with Resiblock ‘22’ W.B, with a further 1,000m2 of paving being sealed with Resiblock Resiecco throughout the hotel walkways and entertainment sectors.

Resiblock & Cretesol have worked in partnership since 2018, culminating in the sealing of multiple sites throughout South Africa, including the airport aprons at Cape Town International Airport (similarly requiring stabilisation to protect against frequent bus traffic) and Somerset East Airport.
