Southampton Airport Extension
The Site
In 2021, Eastleigh Borough Council approved plans for a 164-meter extension to the Northern End of Southampton Airports runway. Following the collapse of Flybe, which accounted for 89% of passengers flying from Southampton Airport, the need to attract new airlines to the site had never been more urgent. However, at the time, the runway could not cope with the size and requirements of modern aircraft, so this project was crucial in securing the long-term future of the airport.
The Challenge
Alongside the extension of the runway, further paving works were carried out including the widening of the ‘turning pad’ at the end of the runway which allows planes to turn and an extension of the block paved aircraft apron, where aircraft taxi to and from.
The extension of the aircraft apron coincides with the hopes of new airline, new routes, more flights and ultimately more passengers through Southampton Airport, as it bids to make itself a direct alternative to flights from London. With the airport now being able to receive modern short haul aircraft, a key challenge required the new airport apron to be able to withstand the weight of the planes as they taxied, without the paving losing its jointing sand.
The Solution
Resiblock have long been trusted and specified as the joint stabiliser of choice at Airports throughout the UK (Heathrow, Glasgow, Tees Valley), and indeed throughout the world (Hamad International, Hong Kong, Christchurch), as they have consistently provided long term joint stabilisation through the product Resiblock ‘22’. Contractors Volkerfitzpatrick had also previously installed Resiblock at Olympic Way, Wembley Stadium, so were confident with both application and the end result.
