The O2 Arena 10th Anniversary
Site
10 years ago, during the renovation of the Millennium Dome, Resiblock was approached to provide a product which would ensure long-term stabilisation of the entire 12,500m² of internal flexibly laid paving at the renamed “O2 Arena, London”. This past month saw the 10th anniversary of the installation of Resiblock Resiecco at the O2 Arena and we are delighted to say that the paving stabilisation is still going strong. The decorative finished precast concrete paving is trafficked by approximately 8 million visitors per year, and 80 million in total since it’s opening in June 2007 and subjected is to vigorous daily cleaning regimes, Resiblock Resiecco continues to stabilise the jointing sand firmly in place whilst also minimising staining from contaminants including food, grease, hot drinks and chewing gum.
Challenge
The main concern for both the client, AEG, and the contractor, Sir Robert McAlpine, was that the “natural sealing process” associated with small element flexibly laid paving externally would not occur in this “internal” environment. It was also anticipated that the cleaning regimes would serve to remove the jointing sand leading to de-stabilisation of the paving and subsequently tripping accidents.
Solution:
Resiblock Resiecco is a solvent free low viscosity thermoplastic-acryl copolymer emulsion, and is therefore suitable for internal application, Resiblock Resiecco was selected by the client and main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine to bring about long term stabilisation of the paving whilst significantly reducing staining by food and drink. Resiblock Technician’s then worked closely with contractors Sir Robert McAlpine to ensure the successful installation of Resiblock Resiecco and to ensure the that one of London’s most prestigious landmarks and latest sports arenas opened on time.
