A urethane based low viscosity prepolymer jointing sand stabiliser of exceptional effectiveness, formulated for all flexibly laid paving. Binds jointing sand together and to the vertical faces of the paver, rendering joints totally impermeable to water and hydrocarbons — even under high velocity water flows, vacuum sweeping and jet-thrust. Designed for the most demanding heavy-duty pavements. Available in 5 litre cans and 25 litre kegs.

Application Summary

Quick-reference checklist of key requirements before and during application

Suitable Surfaces Only Resiblock '22' is suitable for use with Concrete Block Paving and Clay Pavers. It is not suitable for: PIC, Engineering Bricks, Quarry Tiles, Wet Cast/Hydraulically Pressed Flags or Marble.
Steps 1 to 4 must be completed on the same day. On new projects, seal with Resiblock '22' simultaneously with pavement construction on a daily basis. Do not wait until the project is complete.
Resiblock '22' is a two-coat system for concrete block paving. It is not much thicker than water and is applied by watering can and squeegee. Clay pavers require one coat only. Accurate application rates are critical — for standard 100 x 200mm CBP, apply 1 litre evenly per 2 m², being a manageable amount to squeegee.

At-a-Glance Checklist

    Compact as normal

    Complete final compaction of the paving with a plate compactor as normal. Ensure the surface and jointing sand are thoroughly dry and free from dirt before proceeding.

    Sweep thoroughly to remove surplus sand

    Following final compaction, sweep the area thoroughly to remove surplus sand. Ensure the jointing sand has been fully removed from the chamfer. Ensure both sand and paver are completely dry.

    Apply by watering can with rose (1 litre per 2 m²)

    Resiblock '22' is not much thicker than water and is easily applied using a watering can with a rose attached. Fill your watering can, then pour out 1 litre evenly over 2 m² — a manageable amount to squeegee. Ensure the rose is fitted to the watering can.

    Squeegee off the surface, working towards you

    Having applied Resiblock '22' to the pavers, squeegee off the surface starting at the top and always working towards you. Pull the product off the surface — it will pool in the chamfers/joints and be absorbed by the kiln-dried jointing sand.

    Clean all tools immediately with RESICLEAN

    All uncured sealant spillages/splashes and tools must be cleaned immediately using RESICLEAN. Do not use other solvents.

Full Application Instructions

Complete step-by-step guidance from surface preparation through to curing

On new projects, seal with Resiblock '22' simultaneously with pavement construction on a daily basis. Do not wait until the project is complete.
Coverage

Coverage is 1.0–2.5 m² per litre depending on joint width and paver porosity. Accurate application rates are essential to ensure full joint stabilisation — for example, 100 x 200mm CBP at 2 m² per litre. For other dimensions or types of paving, contact Resiblock's Technical Department on 01268 273344. Two coats are recommended for concrete block paving. Clay pavers require one coat only.

Make sure the surface and jointing sand are thoroughly dry and free from dirt. Application to poorly prepared pavers, particularly regarding dampness, can result in inadequate joint penetration or paver adhesion, and in exceptional circumstances discolouration and disbonding. Ensure paving is thoroughly swept and that no jointing sand remains in the chamfers of the pavers.

Trade tip: To check if paving is perfectly dry, scrape out the jointing sand to a depth of 5–10mm. If the sand is dry, so are the blocks.

Method of Application — Concrete Block Paving (Two Coats)
  1. 1
    Apply first coat by watering can with rose

    Apply to the surface using a watering can with the rose attached. For standard 100 x 200mm CBP, pour out 1 litre evenly over 2 m² — a manageable amount to squeegee. Ensure even coverage across the marked area.

  2. 2
    Squeegee off, working towards you

    Squeegee off the surface starting at the top and always working towards you. Remove all surplus with the RESIBLOCK SQUEEGEE — the product will pool in the chamfers/joints and be absorbed by the kiln-dried jointing sand.

  3. 3
    Apply second coat once first is touch dry

    Two coats are recommended for concrete block paving. Apply the second coat once the first coat is touch dry, following the same watering can and squeegee method. For further advice on coat systems, contact Resiblock's Technical Department.

Clay pavers must only have one coat. Do not apply a second coat to clay pavers.
Anti-Slip Surfaces

In certain applications — such as airfields, equestrian facilities and wheelchair access points — and particularly when used as a two-coat system, additional anti-slip qualities may be required. Contact Resiblock's Technical Department for guidance on achieving an anti-slip surface.

Rapid initial cure takes place depending on ambient temperature, humidity and block porosity — 1–3 hours can be expected. Once the surface is dry, the paved area can be subjected to foot or light traffic, but full chemical cure must be allowed to take place (24 hours) before the surface is subjected to full traffic or vehicle use. Avoid walking on the sealed area until the face of the paver is dry to the touch.

Cleaning Tools & Equipment

Resiblock '22' cures rapidly on exposure to atmospheric moisture. Clean all uncured sealant spillages, splashes and tools immediately using RESICLEAN. Do not use other solvents.

Do not return unused material to original containers. Do not reseal or store partly used kegs — Carbon Dioxide may generate and put the drum under pressure, which might rupture it. Any remaining traces in used drums must be cured by leaving containers open and, in dry conditions, adding water to each container.

Resiblock '22' is FLAMMABLE. No smoking or naked flames to be allowed. Ensure the area to be treated is well ventilated. Where public access is permitted, erect NO SMOKING signs and site fire extinguishers. Do not clean hands with RESICLEAN — solvents tend to de-fat skin and can cause dermatological problems.

Resiblock '22' is a urethane based low viscosity prepolymer jointing sand stabiliser of exceptional effectiveness. Its penetration comes about by solvent evaporation, polymerisation being effected by atmospheric moisture. It incorporates a completely unique moisture curing system. Its function is to bind the particles of sand together and to the vertical faces of the paver. Formulated for all flexibly laid paving. Renders joints totally impermeable to water and hydrocarbons, even under high velocity water flows, vacuum sweeping and jet-thrust. Manufactured under ISO 9002.

Specification Clause

For engineers & specifiers — sealing pavers specification

The following specification clause is provided for engineers and specifiers writing tender documents for the sealing and stabilising of paver jointing sand. The material to be used shall be Resiblock '22', available from Resiblock Ltd (+44 (0)1268 273344), or equal and approved.
Minimum Properties

The sealer shall be a liquid SPPU (Specialist Pre-Polymer Urethane) moisture curable (or triggered) aromatic/aliphatic in a hydrocarbon solvent, having the following minimum properties:

  1. Surface curing time not to exceed 24 hours (touch dry approximately 2 hours at 15°C).
  2. Does not adversely affect slip/skid values (independent test report may be required).
  3. Be highly resistant to oils, diesel, petrol and de-icing fluids.
  4. Must not adversely change the colour of the paving.
  5. Elongation at break of film not less than 350% (ASTM D2370).
  6. Withstand temperatures in excess of 200°C.
  7. Prevent jointing sand erosion by a direct jet of water at a pressure no less than 200 bar (1500 p.s.i.), with the lance 150mm from the surface.
  8. Withstand vacuum sweeper suction (minimum velocity 60 m/sec) 24 hours after installation.
  9. The sealer must be capable of penetrating the joints to a minimum depth of 20mm and shall form a flexible elastomeric water and fuel resistant bond.
Performance Requirements

The material will need to withstand a minimum of 10,000,000 cumulative standard axles without distress or deformation to the stabilised sand. This should be demonstrated either by proven track record for a period of no less than 5 years. The sealer shall have a proven safety and performance record of use on similar pavements to that used on this project.

Definition of pavers: For the purposes of this specification, pavers may be defined as any modular paving — usually 100 x 200mm units, 50–100mm in depth — manufactured from either concrete or clay, but may also include small element paving (slabs or flags) which may be natural stone or man-made.
