Application Summary
Quick-reference checklist of key requirements before and during application
-
1Purchase adequate material
25 litres covers approximately 50 m² at 2 coats on concrete block paving. Ensure you have enough before starting — do not order additional material to complete an area mid-project.
-
2Confirm surface is thoroughly dry and clean
Surface and jointing sand must be completely dry and free from dirt. To check: scrape jointing sand to a depth of 5–10mm — if the sand is dry, so are the blocks.
-
3Check weather conditions
Do not apply if rain is forecast within 12 hours, or in temperatures below 3°C or above 30°C.
-
4Sweep paving thoroughly
Ensure paving is thoroughly swept and that no jointing sand remains in the chamfers of the blocks.
-
5Apply using RESI-ROLLER — edges first with a brush
Apply edges with a 10cm paintbrush and the main area with a RESI-ROLLER. 1st coat at 3 m²/litre, 2nd coat at 6 m²/litre. Allow a minimum of 3 hours and a maximum of 24 hours between coats. Apply the second coat at right angles to the first. Clay pavers: one coat only by watering can and squeegee at 2 m²/litre.
-
6Restrict access during cure
No foot traffic for 3 hours after application. No vehicles for 24 hours. Only coat an area you can complete in a single day — if a break is needed, cut in to a sand joint with a brush to avoid a striped effect.
-
7Clean all tools immediately with RESICLEAN
All uncured sealant and tools must be cleaned immediately using RESICLEAN. Do not use other solvents. Resiblock Superior Natural Matt cures rapidly on exposure to atmospheric moisture and cannot be removed once cured.
Full Application Instructions
Complete step-by-step guidance from surface preparation through to maintenance
Resiblock Superior Natural Matt is a 2-coat system for concrete block paving. Coverage can vary depending on absorbency levels. On new concrete pavers, an average of 3 m² per litre can be expected on the first coat and 6 m² per litre on the second. Coverage can be reduced by as much as 25% on old, worn or high-porosity pavers. A similar increased coverage can be expected on specialist designed pavers (e.g. Marley Victorian Knott, Marshalls Tegula). For clay pavers, one coat only is required at 2 m² per litre using the watering can and squeegee method — see the dedicated section below.
The surface must be clean and free from oil, algae, dust and lime bloom. Substrate must be dry — application to damp or wet surfaces can result in poor adhesion and discolouration. Jointing sand containing moisture can prevent bonding and stabilisation of joints. Do not use if rainfall is forecast within 12 hours.
All traces of kiln-dried sand on the face of the blocks must be removed by broom or garden leaf blower (set to 'blow'). Ensure sand does not protrude from the base of the chamfers. If pavers or joints have been previously treated with any other stabiliser or sealer, contact Resiblock's Technical Department prior to application.
Carefully measure the area in square metres and allow a minimum of 5 litres for every 10 m². On new work, a thorough sweep with a stiff broom is usually sufficient. If the surface has become partially weathered or contaminated, wire-brush to remove all debris. For large areas, pressure cleaning may be more effective. Ensure joints are well filled to the bottom of the chamfers with clean, compacted kiln-dried sand.
Pressure clean to remove all algae, lichen, weeds and most of the top layer of jointing sand. If pavers are badly stained with engine oil, replacement should be considered. Treating with Resiblock O.R. before pressure cleaning should remove at least 75% of the stain; once Resiblock Superior Natural Matt is applied it will darken the pavers, camouflaging any remaining stain. Once dry, re-fill joints using kiln-dried sand and sweep in using a soft broom. Remove all surplus sand.
- RESI-ROLLER on an extension pole
- Easi-Clean RESI-SCUTTLE (to avoid constant refills)
- 10cm paintbrush for cutting-in edges and joints
- RESICLEAN for tool cleaning
- For clay pavers: 5 litre watering can with rose attached, and RESIBLOCK SQUEEGEE
-
1Do not dilute. Start at the perimeter
Do not dilute Resiblock Superior Natural Matt. Begin by coating the perimeter of the paved area with a 10cm paintbrush, working the product well into the 'cuts' and edges.
-
2Roll in bands, left to right, keeping the wet edge going
Using the RESI-ROLLER, start top-left and work away from the building. Move left to right in bands approximately 1m deep, walking back to the left to begin each new band. This keeps the wet edge active — failure to do this, particularly in hot weather, may cause 'zebra' striping.
-
3Apply evenly at 3 m²/litre — no misses, no puddles
Work material well into untreated joints, ensuring sufficient product penetrates the jointing sand. Apply a liberal, uniform coat without misses or puddles. Do not attempt to build in one coat — excess material, particularly on light-coloured (buff/grey) pavers, may cause dark yellow/brown discolouration. Ensure accurate spread rate of 3 m²/litre.
-
1Wait — minimum 3 hours, maximum 24 hours
Apply both coats the same day if possible. Wait until the first coat is completely dry. Minimum time between coats: 3 hours at 20°C. Maximum: 24 hours. This limit must be strictly adhered to — exceeding it may cause disbonding and patchiness of the second coat.
-
2Apply second coat at right angles to the first
Apply the second coat at right angles to the first, ensuring the entire area is uniformly and methodically covered. Ensure accurate spread rate of 6 m²/litre.
-
1Mark out an area approximately 1m by 10m
Mark out a section of approximately 1m by 10m (10 m²) to work on at a time. This corresponds to the contents of one 5 litre container at the required coverage rate of 2 m² per litre.
-
2Pour evenly using a 5 litre watering can with rose attached
Evenly pour the contents of the 5 litre container over the marked area using a watering can with a rose attached. This ensures even distribution across the surface.
-
3Immediately spread and squeegee into the joints
Immediately spread the product out and wipe it from the surface and into the paver joints using a RESIBLOCK SQUEEGEE. Sufficient material should be worked into the joints so it initially fills the chamfers and is ultimately completely absorbed. Surplus product must not remain on the paver surface — squeegee it into the joints.
In most cases Resiblock Superior Natural Matt should not adversely affect the grip characteristics of pavers. However, on higher density pavers, gradients, or around fuel pumps (S.S.F.s), additional anti-slip qualities may be required — test on an inconspicuous area first.
To achieve an anti-slip surface: dust dry jointing sand onto the first coat while it is still wet using the broadcast method. When dry, apply the second coat — this 'sandwiches' the aggregate between the two coats. Resiblock Superior Natural Matt must not be used around swimming pools.
Efflorescence can occasionally appear as white powdery patches before application, or creamish patches after. Steps to reduce the risk:
- Apply after a dry spell of at least 48 hours and verify the entire paved area is dry by checking the sand joints.
- Allow 8 weeks after paver installation before applying. Allow at least 2 weeks after washing/pressure cleaning of old installations.
- If lime bloom appears before sealing, clean with Resiblock E.R. (efflorescence remover).
- If in doubt, contact the Resiblock technical department before proceeding.
